Keto Cereal in the UK: What to Buy and What to Avoid

Quick answer

Most supermarket cereals are too high in carbs for keto, at around 21–33g a bowl before you add milk. Keto cereal made from nuts and seeds is the way round it: our Keto Granola has 3.1g net carbs per 30g and our Keto Porridge has 1.9–2.5g net carbs per serving, so you still get a proper cereal-style breakfast.

A bowl of cereal is the easiest breakfast there is, which is why it's one of the first things people miss on keto. The trouble is that almost every cereal in a UK supermarket is built on wheat, corn, rice or oats, and those grains are mostly starch. Even the plain, no-added-sugar options carry more carbs in one bowl than many people on keto eat in a whole morning.

This guide shows how many carbs are in the cereals most of us grew up with, then covers the keto cereal options that actually work: nut and seed granola, seed-based porridge and a quick homemade bowl. Every figure is per portion, so you can compare like with like.

Why most cereals don't fit keto

Most keto plans keep carbs to around 20–50g a day. A standard bowl of cereal uses up most of that on its own, and the milk adds more. Here's how popular cereal types compare with our granola and porridge. The supermarket figures are averages from the UK government's food composition data (CoFID), which tested several brands of each type, so a particular pack may differ slightly.

Supermarket cereals: CoFID 2021 averages per 100g, multiplied by the portion shown, before milk. Portions are our assumption of a typical bowl (30g for flakes and rice cereals, 40g for porridge oats and wheat squares, 45g for muesli and clusters); pack serving sizes vary. Supermarket cereals contain no polyols, so both columns match. Groovy Keto figures come from the nutrition table on each product page, where net carbs are carbohydrate minus polyols (erythritol).

Notice that the plain, low-sugar cereals don't do much better than the sugary ones. Bran flakes, wheat biscuits and porridge oats are low in sugar, but they're still made from grain, so the carbohydrate comes from starch instead. For keto, it's the total carbohydrate that matters, not just the sugar line.

Keto granola: how to eat it

Our keto granola swaps oats for nuts and seeds. It's a crunchy mix of cashews, walnuts and almonds with sunflower and pumpkin seeds, desiccated coconut, flaxseed and chia, sweetened with erythritol and stevia, with no added sugar. There are two flavours, Keto Granola Cinnamon and Keto Granola Cocoa, and both have 3.1g net carbs per 30g serving. A 360g pouch holds about 12 servings.

Because it's made from nuts rather than flakes, it's richer than a supermarket cereal, so 30g goes further than you might expect. Three easy ways to eat it:

  • As a bowl of cereal. Pour 30g into a bowl with cold unsweetened almond or soya drink, just as you would cornflakes.
  • With yoghurt. Spoon it over plain full-fat Greek-style yoghurt with a few raspberries. Add the granola just before you eat so it stays crunchy.
  • As a topping. Scatter a spoonful over keto porridge, a smoothie bowl or a dish of berries and double cream.

Keto porridge: a hot cereal for winter

When the mornings turn cold, keto porridge gives you the warm, spoonable bowl that oats normally would. Ours isn't made with oats at all: it's based on milled flaxseeds, chia seeds, desiccated coconut, chicory root fibre and coconut flour, sweetened with erythritol and stevia. It thickens as it stands, much like oat porridge.

There are three flavours, each in a 280g bag of eight 35g servings:

  • Keto Porridge Original: 1.9g net carbs per serving. A plain base that takes any topping.
  • Keto Porridge Cocoa: 2g net carbs per serving, made with cocoa powder.
  • Keto Porridge Cinnamon: 2.5g net carbs per serving, made with cinnamon.

How to make it: add a 35g serving (just over 2 tablespoons) to a bowl and pour in 100ml of milk or water, or 80ml if you like it thicker. Microwave on high for 60 seconds, adding 20–30 seconds more if you're using water. Stir, leave it for a few minutes to thicken, and give it another 20–30 seconds if needed. You can also stir it in a non-stick pan over a medium heat.

Keep the bowl low in carbs

Make it with water or an unsweetened plant drink rather than cow's milk. A bowl of Original made with 100ml of unsweetened soya drink comes to about 2.4g net carbs, against about 6.6g with 100ml of semi-skimmed milk. Then add a few raspberries, a spoonful of nut butter or a scatter of granola.

Allergens

Our Keto Granola contains nuts (cashews, walnuts and almonds) and is produced in a facility that also handles peanuts, sesame, soy, milk and sulphites. Our Original Keto Porridge is made in a facility where there may be traces of gluten, other nuts, cereals, milk and eggs. Both are sweetened with erythritol, and the porridge label notes that excessive consumption may have a laxative effect. Check the Cinnamon and Cocoa porridge packs for their allergen information. Always check the pack for full allergen information.

Milk and toppings: the carbs you add

What goes on top can matter as much as the cereal. Cow's milk contains lactose (milk sugar), so a generous splash adds several grams. Unsweetened plant drinks add very little. These CoFID figures show what common extras add to a bowl.

Milk or topping Portion Carbs
Unsweetened soya drink 125ml 0.6g
Double cream 2 tbsp (30ml) 0.5g
Semi-skimmed milk 125ml 5.9g
Whole milk 125ml 5.8g
Greek-style yoghurt, plain 100g 4.8g
Raspberries 40g (a small handful) 2.0g
Strawberries 50g 3.1g
Blueberries 40g 3.6g

CoFID 2021 figures per 100g, multiplied by the portion shown (taking 100ml of milk as roughly 100g). Unsweetened almond and coconut drinks are also low in carbs, but they're not in CoFID, so check the carton. Sweetened and "original" plant drinks can contain added sugar.

Make your own keto cereal

If you'd rather mix your own, a nut and seed bowl takes two minutes. Toss together 15g of walnuts, 10g of pecans, 10g of pumpkin seeds and a spoonful (5g) of desiccated coconut, add a pinch of cinnamon, then pour over cold unsweetened soya or almond drink. Based on CoFID figures, that bowl has about 3g of carbs before the milk. Toast the nuts and coconut in a dry pan for a minute first if you like a deeper flavour.

For something closer to shop-bought granola, bake a batch of clusters at the weekend. Our homemade keto granola recipe uses nuts, seeds and sweetener with no added sugar, and keeps in an airtight jar.

What to look for on a UK label

If you're checking a cereal in the shop, a few minutes with the nutrition panel tells you whether it can work on keto:

  • Read the carbohydrate line. On UK labels, fibre is listed separately and is already left out of carbohydrate, so you don't need to subtract it again. Our guide to net carbs on UK food labels explains why.
  • Check for polyols. Sweeteners such as erythritol are counted inside carbohydrate. Many keto products show them as "of which polyols", and net carbs are carbohydrate minus polyols.
  • Compare per portion, not just per 100g. Check the serving size, too: some packs use 30g, others 45g.
  • Don't stop at "no added sugar". It tells you about sugar, not starch. A no-added-sugar muesli is still mostly oats and has around 21g of carbs in 30g.
  • Look at the first ingredient. If it's wheat, oats, rice or corn, the cereal will be high in carbs whatever the front of the box says. Nuts, seeds or coconut first is a better sign.

Frequently asked questions

Is there any cereal you can eat on keto?

Most supermarket cereals aren't keto, because they're made from wheat, corn, rice or oats and have around 21–33g of carbs per bowl. Cereals made from nuts and seeds are the exception. Groovy Keto Keto Granola has 3.1g net carbs per 30g, and our Keto Porridge has 1.9–2.5g net carbs per 35g serving.

Are oats keto?

No, not in normal portions. A 40g serving of porridge oats has about 28g of carbohydrate, which is most or all of a typical keto day. Seed-based keto porridge made with flaxseed, chia and coconut gives you a similar warm bowl. Our guide Is porridge keto? compares the figures in full.

What milk can you have with keto cereal?

Unsweetened soya, almond or coconut drinks are the lowest-carb choices, and CoFID lists unsweetened soya at 0.5g carbs per 100ml. Cow's milk has about 4.7g per 100ml, so a 125ml splash adds roughly 6g. A little double cream or plain Greek-style yoghurt also works. Avoid sweetened and flavoured plant drinks.

How many carbs are in a bowl of normal cereal?

Usually around 21–33g before milk. CoFID figures put 30g of cornflakes at 27.3g of carbohydrate, 30g of bran flakes at 22g, 45g of Swiss-style muesli at 32.7g and 40g of porridge oats at 28.3g. Adding 125ml of semi-skimmed milk puts on roughly another 6g, so a typical bowl can pass 30g.

Is keto porridge made with oats?

No. Groovy Keto Porridge isn't made with oats. It's based on milled flaxseeds, chia seeds, desiccated coconut, chicory root fibre and coconut flour, sweetened with erythritol and stevia, and the Cinnamon and Cocoa versions add cinnamon or cocoa powder. Stir 100ml of milk or water into a 35g serving and microwave it for about a minute.
